Lots of people start off in this game buying a module in the steam sale, playing, finding out how fun it is, then moving to the standalone game in order to get more access to alpha/beta planes.
Today in the newsletter. 'Please note that the DCS: M-2000C, and all future DCS World DLC releases on Steam, will now use Steam Keys instead of Starforce keys. As such, these purchases cannot be activated on the DCS World e-Shop version. Previous purchases will not be affected.'
This new decision to only produce steam keys and not allow the license to be transferred to ED's starforce is a troubling proposition to this because people starting off in steam would have to 'rebuy' all the modules they want to play in the standalone game. What I HOPE this decision will turn into, ED throwing starforce into the sea and using steam's DRM solution enabling I and many others to host paid maps in a VM (virtual machine) environment (which is not currently possible at this point), and fixing a multitude of other problems with starforce, But I seriously doubt it. Not happy at all with this decision.
-Drex aka afinegan -16AGR- • • • • •. It will lead to tons of unhappy people who find out afterwards that DCS Steam is the gimped version, having to repurchase modules in order to get into standalone. It's pretty clear that ED has a strong dislike for Steam by pulling something like this, which is somewhat understandable due to the cut steam takes. I'm sure it's not an easy market even without a seller taking a chunk of the proceeds for themselves.
However, then you have to make some difficult choices. Either stick with Steam and accept it, or stop selling on it completely. I suspect Steam sales are still high enough that stopping alltogether would hurt too much financially. Now they chose this incredibly awkward middle ground of having Steam sell their product but basically giving anyone who buys there a fat middlefinger. In the end its the unsuspecting customer who will pay the price of this, and that's a pretty nasty thing to do.
