Yeah, it took my about 4 cities to realize adding extra lanes is usually a waste of time.
My current city with 30k is about 80% two lane roads and has no six lane roads. In your current situation you may want to make the next intersection a roundabout or a square. I started using squares a lot recently. You use four one-way (two-lane) roads in a counterclockwise pattern. Then you can stick four-lane roads in the sides or highway ramps on the corners. Plus it makes a nice spot for a landmark in the middle!
